HISTORY
Griffin Glasshouses has been designing and building made to measure glasshouses since the early 1960/s. The first glasshouse covered 2 & 1/8 Acres and that nursery has long since been sold for housing development, but not before that glasshouse yielded a few thousand tons of tomatoes.

 In 1968, the present MD, took a year out to re-think the whole glasshouse industry requirements, and pioneered a totally new concept of glasshouse technology. Hitherto, all aluminum and timber glazing bars had been made in the form on an inverted "T"; this design was copied from the original wooden glazing bars, and is still used to a small extent today. The main fault with the old system is twofold, Firstly: it acts as a cooling fin and in winter time contributes significantly to the amount of heat necessary to protect the crop, Secondly: it allows moss to get a firm foothold very quickly along the sides of the glass, this in turn causes leaks and sometime breaks the glass. The result according to figures published by the Mm. of Ag. In the 1960-70’s made it essential to completely reglaze the roof of commercial glasshouses every 9 years, and some times as often as 4 years depending on location.
The Griffin design removed all of these problems, and most commercial manufacturers have tried to copy to a large degree our design, this must be proof that we are on the right lines. One hidden but most important bonus is that because the glass is insulated away from the aluminum, and sealed completely along both edges by a rigid but still slightly flexible white Upvc retaining strip,
the glass cannot easily be broken by severe storm wind conditions. It is a very rare occasion for any of our glasshouses to suffer from broken glass.

 Only in the early seventies did we move towards the
domestic side of the industry. The discerning eye will
observe that on most of our products, our commercial
quality shows through, particularly in regard to ventilation, and the inherent strength of the structure. Interesting to note that almost none of our competitors ever produced glasshouses for the professionals.
TODAY
99% of our production is in designing and constructing to suit individual client's requirements.
We are frequently required to build to suit with Grade 1 Listed Houses and others are in conservation areas, which require planning consent, the drawings for which we will provide when in a contract situation free of charge. We do offer a specialist design service to each client, naturally to start with we must obtain from the client a list. Of all his/her basic requirements and from there we can formulate a design to suit the client. We do tend to take on the more difficult jobs.

MATERIALS
We manufacture from Aluminum, steel
(Hot dipped Galvanized) and high quality timber. We
can mix the materials to arrive at the desired ppearance
the client requires. Powder Coating is a modern form of enameling, (not as good) and is available in coloured
finishes to any acknowledged British Standard. This can
be applied to both aluminum and galvanized steel.
Glazing materials can generally be whatever the client, requires, from horticuIturaI glass, toughened glass,
laminated glass, polycarbonates single and twin walled, even double glazed sealed units can be catered for with different profiles.

Painted timber is always a problem in the long term, as
it does require sanding and several coats of paint,
particularly to the outside surfaces every 3-7 years.
Naturally, good quality timber can be treated with
sympathetic natural wood preservatives, which are considerably easier to apply to maintain a neat
appearance.

VENTILATION
A range of fully automatic and hand operated ventilation systems are available.

 HEATING
This we will undertake to design to suit your glasshouse and pocket, and can be from at the least expensive end, electric fan heaters, to fully automatic hot water systems.

IRRIGATION
Computer controlled drip and mist systems can be tailor-made. More simple systems are available. ystems for hanging baskets are readily available to suit you layout.

INTERNAL WATER STORAGE
The use of large cattle troughs is the most inexpensive method we have discovered to store water internally with covers to protect the water and stop the growth of algae. We have designed a system that allows you use this water automatically or by a hand held trigger’ operated watering lance direct onto your plants without wasting water.

 BENCHING
We manufacture a range of economic
aluminum light duty staging, suitable for most requirements. A heavy-duty commercial system is available and can be mobile* if required. *Mobile means the ability to have several benches in a glasshouse, and share one pathway between several benches.

ELECTRICS
A variety of electrical installations can be offered, covering most equirements from the most discerning professional.

SHADING
A variety of shading materials are available, and each installation system is evaluated upon its merits, which include internal roller blinds; and for the larger systems, a manual or motorised pull system can be used. There is also the old traditional cedar slats that can be fitted to the outside of the roof, and some fabric systems allow themselves to be used in this fashion, although outside shading is generally not as efficent as the internal systems.

BUILDING WORKS
Depending upon distance, we will undertake the complete building works including soil leveling, removal of existing buildings and disposal of same.

ERECTION & GLAZING
We always provide a complete erection and glazing service, as it is very important that the structure is erected in the correct sequence

Discounts do not apply, as each project is individually made for each client, and. it does not make sense to add onto the basic costs in order to be able to give a discount.
